UPDATE: We’ve had an important update. The Council’s Head of Communication has just been in contact to say that they are now in conversation with the Police. Keep sending letters – our pressure is working! UPDATE: Despite well over 5000 letters being sent to Leeds City Council and Police, it seems that they’re still unwilling to budge. In fact, the Council’s Head of Communication wrote to Leeds Councillors saying “that local authorities do not have the power to deal with this kind of issue or prevent a march from taking place.” The truth is that the Council can apply to the Home Secretary to ban the march – which is exactly what happened when the EDL’s march was banned in Luton, and I’m told, what the Council in Manchester are about to do. Please send the a message calling on them to contact the Home Office to get this violent march banned. Both West Yorkshire Police and Leeds City Council are concerned about this march – we need as many people as possible to contact them to get them to apply to the Home Secretary to ban the march. Last week a similar march in Birmingham ended in violence – we can’t let this happen on the streets of Leeds. Use our tool to contact the Council and the Police – it’ll only take a minute to send a message: Click “Participate” to get started. |
